You’re Not Broken. You Just Forgot Who You Are

TrueSelf in Flip-Flops: One woman’s barefoot journey to self-love & salty freedom

Ever whispered to yourself: “What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I just be happy?”

If so, you’re not alone. Many of us walk around feeling like something inside us is broken. We think we need fixing. We chase new diets or the next “life hack” that promises to make us whole.

But here’s the truth: you’re not broken. You never were. You just forgot who you are.

Why We Feel Broken

It’s easy to forget yourself in a world that’s always asking you to be more, do more, and look better.

  • Social media tells you you’re not enough.

  • Work makes you believe you have to prove your worth every day.

  • Family and culture hand you masks to wear so you can “fit in.”

And slowly, without even noticing, you start living for other people’s approval. You stop hearing your own voice.

That’s not brokenness. That’s forgetting.

The Big Lie: “You Need to Be Fixed”

Search “how to be happy” on Google and you’ll see millions of tips, tools, and courses. The world screams: you’re missing something—buy this, follow that, fix yourself.

But let me ask you this: if you weren’t broken in the first place, what’s there to fix?

The real problem isn’t that you’re missing pieces. It’s that you’ve buried your true self under layers of noise, fear, and expectation.

And once you remember who you are underneath all that—you realize joy isn’t something to chase. It’s something that’s always been there.

How to Remember Who You Are

So how do you reconnect with your true self? How do you rediscover joy within? Here are a few simple steps you can start today:

1. Spend 5 Minutes in Silence

No phone. No music. No scrolling. Just sit with yourself. It may feel strange at first, but silence lets you hear your own inner voice again.

2. Do Something You Loved as a Child

Dance. Draw. Play outside. Sing in the shower. Remember: joy was easy before you cared who was watching.

3. Say “No” When You Want To

Notice when you’re about to say yes just to keep someone happy. Try saying no. Each no is a yes to your freedom.

4. Practice Gratitude for Yourself

Not just for your house, car, or family—but for you. Write down three things about yourself you’re thankful for today.

These steps may feel small, but they rebuild the bridge back to your true self.

What Happens When You Remember

When you stop trying to fix yourself and start remembering yourself, life feels lighter.

  • Joy stops being rare.

  • Freedom stops being something you chase.

  • You wake up with peace instead of pressure.

And the best part? You don’t need anyone’s permission to live this way.

Final Word

You are not broken. You are not missing pieces. You’re not too late.

The real you—the one full of freedom, laughter, and light—is still here. Waiting.

You don’t need to fix yourself. You just need to remember yourself.

And when you do… joy, freedom, and peace won’t be strangers anymore. They’ll be home.
